IMM Cirendeu and BEM UMJ Hold Action to Defend the Rempang and Nagari Air Bangis Tragedies

The Cirendeu Branch of the Muhammadiyah Student Association (IMM ) together with the Jakarta Muhammadiyah University Student Executive Board (BEM UMJ ) held a demonstration regarding the tragedy that occurred in Rempang and Air Bangis. Students demonstrated in front of the Presidential Palace, Friday (29/09/2023).

The demonstration criticized the status of customary land, investment, and repressive actions carried out by security forces in an effort to relocate the community. According to the results of a strategic study conducted by IMM Cirendeu and BEM UMJ, the government's actions were taken in the interests of National Strategic Projects (PSN) as stated in the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, number 7, 2023 concerning Changes to the List of National Strategic Projects.

In this case, there are at least seven demands submitted to the central government of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, including the authorities. Firstly, demanding to recognize and respect the rights of Indigenous Peoples both on Rempang Island and Nagari Air Bangis. Second, implementing Agrarian Reform to manage national strategic projects with common sense and a clean conscience while upholding the value of human rights. Third, apply general principles of good governance in decision and policy making by truly listening to public participation and affected communities. Fourth, not to carry out evictions or shifts for relocation which are detrimental to the Rempang community.

Fifth, demand that the Indonesian Police not repeat acts of violence or criminalization against the people of Rempang and Air Bangis. Sixth, demanding the Indonesian Police to review and re-evaluate the success of implementing police reform towards implementation with the slogan precision, as an acronym for productive, in the form of carrying out tasks quickly and precisely, responsively, humanely, transparently, responsibly and fairly. Seventh, demanding to realize the ideal Police as a guarantee of security to support national development programs, making the Police institution a law enforcement apparatus that serves and is an example, and always maintains diversity.

Hundreds of IMM Cirendeu Branch cadres and UMJ students filled half of the road in the Arjuna Wiwaha Statue area or known as the Horse Statue in Central Jakarta in an orderly manner to speak out on the street with the aim of getting the government to hear the aspirations of existing community concerns compared to the interests of certain groups.

General Chairperson of PC IMM Cirendeu Branch, Asyraf Al Faruqi Tuhulele, revealed that the action to defend the people of Rempang and Air Bangis is a concrete form that students have always been at the forefront of fighting injustice in the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.

“The tragedy that occurred on Rempang Island and Nagari Air Bangis has hurt the hearts of the Indonesian people, not just the Malays. Today it is Rempang and Air Bangis, tomorrow maybe other villages. We are forced to move because of the interests of a few people, namely the government which is a puppet of the economic oligarchy in Indonesia. "Don't back down, show that students are still at the forefront of defending injustice and oppression in society," said Asyraf.

The demonstration was carried out based on the results of a strategic study with experts. As stated by the Head of the Wisdom Division of PC IMM Cirendeu Achmad Fauzan, the strategic study which was followed by a demonstration was sparked by a sense of humanity.

Fauzan said that the demonstration was aimed at warning the government about its policies and decisions which represented a setback and even damaged the morale and image of reform in upholding democracy and eradicating corruption. "The ratification of this new Criminal Code will threaten democratic freedom and make it easier to commit corruption due to the lightness of the criminal threat from criminal acts of corruption," he said.

Meanwhile, the Chair of BEM UMJ Sarlin Wagola said that students are agents of change who must have sensitivity to social and political issues and be able to fight for good values and not be vague about their substance.

"As students we must have sensitivity and a sense of responsibility towards social and political issues, don't let the student movement die , checks and balances of power are absent from us as agents of change who of course as educated people can activate theories in the classroom into the field like today. this," said Sarlin.

Previously, IMM Cirendeu Branch held a consolidation meeting, to explain the points and prepare all forms of needs on the day of the demonstration. It is known that IMM Cirendeu Branch is one of the branch leaders under the auspices of the DKI Jakarta Regional Leadership Council (DPD). It is nothing new that the IMM Cirendeu Branch has been involved in several demonstrations, because the IMM Cirendeu Branch cares about and actively looks at social phenomena and symptoms. (IMM/Cireundeu).
