National Heroes Immortalized at UMJ

There are a number of national heroes who are Muhammadiyah figures including Kasman Singodimedjo, KH. Mas Mansoer, and Ir. H. Djuanda Kartawidjaja. The three of them were immortalized by the Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta (UMJ) as the name of the Faculty Auditorium. This was done as a form of commemorating the services that the three of them had provided to the Indonesian nation, especially the Muhammadiyah organization.

Kasman Singodimedjo was immortalized by the Muhammadiyah University of Jakarta (UMJ) as the name of the Hall at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP). Kasman Singodimedjo is a national hero and Muhammadiyah figure who is known for the principle "Life is struggle," a sentence that is familiar to members of the Muhammadiyah organization. He adhered to this principle tightly from when he was young until he died to fight for Indonesia and Muhammadiyah.

Kasman Singodimedjo was born 25 February 1904 in Bagelen Purworejo, Central Java, and died in Jakarta 25 October 1982. Kasman was given the title of national hero through Presidential Decree Number 123/TK in 2018 concerning the Award of the Title of National Hero.

Kasman became a key figure in preparing and defending Indonesian independence. He was a pioneer in the formation of the People's Security Army (TKR). Then, during the formulation of the state's foundations, he became a figure in the release of the seven words in the First Principles of the Jakarta Charter as Belief in One Almighty God.

Kasman took part in various organizations, he was an administrator of the Jong Islamieten Bond (JIB), the Indonesian Independence Preparatory Affairs Agency (BUPKI), the Indonesian Independence Preparatory Committee (PPKI), the Central Indonesian National Committee (KNIP), the Masyumi Party, and was Chairman of the Muhammadiyah Branch. The nickname 'Kiyai' is not familiar enough to be found among Muhammadiyah figures. This call is familiar to Nadhlatul Ulama (NU) figures, the name for a cleric, Muhammadiyah more often uses religious calls such as ustadz and buya.

However, Muhammadiyah does not have any ulama, some in particular have the nickname Kiyai and the title of national hero, namely KH. Mas Mansoer. Name KH. Mas Mansoer was immortalized as the name of the Hall at the Faculty of Islamic Religious Sciences (FAI).

KH. Mas Mansoer was born on June 25 1986 in Surabaya, his father was Kyai Haji Mas Ahmad Marzuki, an Islamic pioneer, a famous religious expert in East Java and his mother was Raudhah, a rich woman who came from the Sidoresmo Wonokromo Islamic Boarding School family in Surabaya.

Mas Mansoer is a national ulama figure in the Indonesian independence movement with a Muhammadiyah background. He was part of a triumvirate with Sukarno, Mohammad Hatta, and Ki Hajar Dewantoro. These four figures are considered to be influential groups during Indonesia's independence period.

As someone who has a nationalist spirit, KH. Mas Mansoer was heavily involved in the events of Indonesian independence. He is also listed as a member of the Indonesian Independence Preparatory Business Management Board (BUPKI). Not only that, before the proclamation of Indonesian independence he was also appointed as a member of the Preparatory Committee for Indonesian Independence (PPKI).

In the Muhammadiyah organization, Mas Mansoer was once chairman of the First Tarjih Council and general chairman of the so-called Five Suns which was attributed to KH. Ahmad Dahlan, KH. Ibrahim, KH. Fakhrodin, and KH. Hisham.

Mas Mansoer's efforts in fighting for independence were also seen by him establishing other Islamic organizations, such as the Indonesian A'la Islamic Council (MIAI). Apart from that, other organizations that are involved include Sarekat Islam (SI), Moe'tamaroel Alam Islam Far'oel Indies Syarkiyyah (MAHIS), Masyumi Party, and Indonesian Islamic Students (PII).

In the midst of the outbreak of the war for independence, Mas Mansoer died in detention on April 25 1946. His body was buried in Gipo, Surabaya. Mas Mansoer was awarded the title of National Independence Hero on June 26 1964.

The third Muhammadiyah figure immortalized was Ir. H. Djuanda Kartawidjaja, whose name was immortalized by UMJ as the name of the Faculty of Engineering (FT) hall. Djuanda is a figure who initiated the concept of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). He provided the concept of the unity of the Republic of Indonesia not only in the form of sovereignty over land areas but over maritime areas as well.

This concept is known as the Djuanda Declaration, the declaration states that the Indonesian seas include the seas around, between and within the Indonesian archipelago as part of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia.

Previously, the territory of the Republic of Indonesia referred to the 1939 Dutch East Indies Ordinance, namely the Territoriale Zeen en Maritieme Kringen Ordonantie (TZMKO). In this regulation, the Dutch stated that the Indonesian islands in the archipelago were separated by the sea around them and each island only had sea 3 miles from the coastline.  

Then the Djuanda Declaration stated that Indonesia adheres to the principles of an archipelagic state. After going through various long struggles, the Djuanda declaration was finally accepted in 1982. The Djuanda Declaration was formalized into Law no. 4/PRP/1960 concerning Indonesian Waters and stipulated in the Third UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982. 

Ir. Djuanda was born in Tasikmalaya on January 14 1911, his father was Raden Kartawijaya and his mother was Nyi Monat. He once served as the 10th Prime Minister and was a Muhammadiyah administrator in Tasikmalaya City. Based on RI Presidential Decree No. 244/1963 Ir. H. Djuanda Kartawijaya was confirmed as a national figure.
