Protect Yourself from Air Pollution
In commemoration of world clean air day which falls on September 7 2023, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health, Muhammadiyah University, Jakarta (FKK UMJ), Dr. Dr. Muhammad Fachri, Sp.P, FAPSR., FISR., explained the problem of air pollution and how to respond to it.
"Pollution is toxic particles or gases found in the free air as a source of irritation for everyone which can cause lung irritation," said Dr. Fachri
Pollution can be caused by several things, including motor vehicle fumes, industrial exhaust fumes and gases, and fumes from burning waste. Burning waste will produce a strong, pungent odor that can make people short of breath. "All of these are sources of pollutants that can pollute the air," added Dr. Fachri.
The effect of pollution on body health, especially on the lungs, is that it causes respiratory problems ranging from the mildest symptoms such as coughs, colds, Respiratory Tract Infections (ARI) to serious symptoms such as lung cancer. Air pollution is getting worse because Indonesia is being hit by a long dry season caused by the El Nino storm climate phenomenon.
Lack of rainfall makes pollution difficult to overcome. Therefore, the Government has recently created artificial rainfall in several areas. Even though it didn't last long, this artificial rain was able to cool the air in the capital for a moment. Responding to the phenomenon of artificial rain, dr. Fachri explained that artificial rain can reduce toxic gas particles lodged in the air. These particles will fall together with the liquid or droplets emitted by artificial rain, so that they can clean the environment.
However, artificial rain is not always possible. This is because one of the conditions for artificial rain to occur is the presence of a location with clouds that have the potential for high rainfall. Therefore, in order not to depend on artificial rain, you need to know how to prevent exposure to air pollution.
"If you start coughing, you need to immediately go to an area or place where the air quality is cleaner. Another prevention is to stay away from places full of pollution. But if we have to be in a place full of pollution, don't forget to always wear personal protective equipment so that particles don't easily enter your breath. "Another way can also be to implement restrictions on outdoor activities, such as Work From Home ," said Dr. Fachri.
On the same occasion, dr. Fachri also highlighted the use of electric vehicles which is widely discussed. Electric cars or motorbikes have zero emissions. This means that there are no pollutants contained so the vehicle is safe from toxic gases.
