Getting to Know Academic Terms for New Students
Are you a new student at Muhammadiyah University Jakarta ? Let's look at some academic terms that you should know before starting lectures.
The beginning of the semester is usually the time for new students to get to know the campus environment. Moreover, each campus will compete to provide interesting introductory activities for new students. We know this term as Introduction to New Student Campus Life (PKKMB).
After getting to know campus life, including facilities, organizations, teaching staff, and campus environment. Students will be busy with lectures. However, apart from campus and major issues, new students also need to understand the various academic terms in the world of lectures so that they are not confused when hearing them.
1. KRS
The first term in the world of lectures is KRS. KRS is an acronym for Study Plan Card, which is a list of courses chosen by each student for lecture activities during one semester. Did you know? Determining your KRS every semester is important to do, so you can graduate on time.
2. Credits
This abbreviation for Semester Credit Unit is closely related to the previous term. SKS is a measure of time for student study activities in each course. In simple terms, credits are the same as study time in each subject you took in high school which has been adjusted to the study load of each subject for one semester. Each university has a minimum and maximum number of credits taken. In 1 semester, the maximum study load that can be taken is 24 credits. The load has been divided into each course you choose, such as 2 credits, 3 credits, 4 credits, or 6 credits. The greater the number of credits, the greater the amount of time taken for that course.
3. KHS
KHS is an abbreviation for Study Results Card. You will get a Study Results Card at the end of the semester. If you put it like this, KHS is the same as the report card that students receive at the end of each semester at the early to upper secondary education levels. From the KHS sheet, you will find out how much you achieved during one semester of study. This KHS will also determine when you fill out the KRS, how many courses or credit load you can take for the next semester. So use your study time well, okay?
4. GPA
The Cumulative Achievement Index or GPA is part of the KHS. Just like in high school report cards, GPA is the average score obtained from the start to the end of the semester. This GPA will always be different each semester, depending on the weight of the course grades achieved. Surely you have heard of students graduating cum laude, magna cum laude, or summa cum laude. For the cum laude predicate, students must have a GPA above 3.50-3.70, magna cum laude above 3.79-3.99, and summa cum laude above 3.99 or a perfect 4.00. This predicate is obtained from the accumulated total of the student's initial to final assessments.
5. Social studies
IPS or Semester Achievement Index is an assessment that is closely related to GPA, IPS is also located at KHS. In contrast to the GPA which is the average grade from the beginning to the end of the semester, IPS is an assessment system in which all course grades are taken in one semester. The difference is, IPS only describes the results of one semester. Social Studies will also influence the number of credits that can be taken during one semester. Usually IPS will appear with grades A, B, C, D, and E. Each predicate has a different grade weight. The weight A is worth 4, B is worth 3, C is worth 2, D is worth 1, and E is worth 0.
